Whilst most folk are familiar with the common or garden gnome in his bright working clothes and red pointy hat, few are cognizant of the much rarer academic gnome in his rusty or greenish tattered academic gown, colourful hood and (normally) black square academic cap.

Well, on this and the following pages you can see many examples
of the varieties of academic costume sported by the academic gnomes.
Most of the costumes shown belong to Theo Gnome (aged 345 years), son of the learned Doctor Hieronymous T. Gnome, the senior member of the Clan of Academic Gnomes.

Dame Griselda,MSc(Dom). There are few female academics gnomes, and most of these are exceedingly shy and retiring. This is Theo’s mother in her Mistress of Domestic Science gown, cap and hood.
Beryl the Gnome (q.v.) is the latest addition to the esteemed holders of the MSc(Dom).
Theo’s father, the eminent Dr. Hieronymous T. Gnome in his D.Litt(Oxenhope) robes.
Hieronymous is the author of “An Exhaustive History of the Ancient and Virtuous Order of the Bearded Nuns of St. Barbera(sic)”, (1934) The Trouser Press, Wormley.
